Ever since you were a teenager your Sex Ed teacher, or probably your mother, drilled into you the importance of contraception.
So you can imagine the frustration when you finally get to an age when a child doesn't seem like such an crazy idea, only to find you're one of the one in 6 couples in Australia affected by unexplained infertility?
At BUMP, we specialise in the area of personalised fertility medicine, providing tailored treatments designed to optimise overall health to improve fertility in both men and women.
Say Hello To Fertility DNA Nutritional Profile Testing (Nutrigenomics)
So what is fertility nutrigenomics? It's a fancy word for biochemistry. Nutrigenomics is the interaction between your genes, your diet and how that affects your fertility health. This includes genetic SNPs involved in key nutritional needs for optimal fertility like the metabolism of vitamins A, C, D and B12 as well as folate, glutathione and coenzyme Q10. Genes included in in our Fertility DNA nutritional profile are BCM01, FUT2, TCN2, SCL23A1, DHCR7, CYP2R1, GC, VDR, CYP24A1, MTHFR (both 677 and 1298), MTHFD1, MTR, MTRR, PEMT, FADS1, NQ01, GSTP1, GPX1, SOD2 and CAT.
All of these things play a role in fertility, chronic disease risk and other underlying conditions that influence fertility like inflammation, digestive problems and hormone related conditions.
Through genetic testing, we'll see what genes you've inherited, what variations you may have and what we can do nutritionally and lifestyle-wise to compensate for those variations, and restore your natural fertility.
BUMP Fertility is developed to reveal the key things to know if you are trying to conceive, and why diet and lifestyle factors shouldn't be ignored.
Taking Your Natural Fertility Health One Step Deeper
When supporting fertility management, from a functional and holistic perspective, there are a number of factors that are typically taken into consideration to optimise fertility and birth outcomes. This is for both males and females.
This can include balancing hormones and menstrual cycle, supporting egg and sperm quality, optimising foetal development and brain health, identifying and supporting the prevention of potential risk factors such as hypertension, folate deficiencies, heavy metal toxicity and diabetes.
Trying to restore and improve natural fertility without knowing your SNPs is like playing a game of 'hit & miss'. This is why your current attempts at improving fertility with off the shelf vitamins or herbal formulations may not be working. Your body is fighting you all the way.
Once you get tested at BUMP, you can really target your natural strategies to work with your bodies own natural rhythm, which is why we achieve such good results.
So how is gene expression linked to infertility?
Nutrients and the environment may also influence gene expression. A gene variation together with poor nutrient metabolism, diminished microbiome health and environmental factors like pollution and toxins may therefore have an impact on fertility, which is why we include the Fertility Detoxification and Microbiome profile within our BUMP Premium package.
These tests along with nutrigenomic testing provide the opportunity to identify genetic variations that may influence gene function and may be supported or modified with nutrients, diet and various other environmental changes.
There are a number of gene variations to examine and it’s important not to limit these to just those associated directly with fertility. As indicated above, the whole person should be considered, from hormonal balance, stress and mood, nutritional requirements of the growing foetus, optimal gut microbiome and function, to blood pressure and exposure to environmental toxins. The table below outlines an example of a number of SNPs we consider when supporting fertility patients.
