5 Myths about PCOS and fertility

PCOS is a leading cause of lowered fertility in women and is often poorly diagnosed. If you experience irregular periods, weight gain (despite diet and exercise), and sugar cravings, acne, and excess facial hair you may have PCOS. This means that you may find it difficult to fall pregnant naturally. Natural treatments for PCOS and improving your fertility do work and can dramatically increase your odds of falling pregnant naturally.

What Is PCOS?

PCOS refers to multiple cysts on the ovaries and a host of other problems that go along with them, including lack of ovulation, lowered fertility, menstrual abnormalities, facial hair, male pattern baldness, acne, and obesity. Women suffering from this condition may also have varying degrees of insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and an increased incidence of Type II diabetes, high cholesterol & elevated androgen levels.

There are a many myths surrounding PCOS here are a few of them.....

MYTH 1: If you are overweight there is nothing you can do.

INCORRECT! If you have PCOS and you are overweight, it can be more challenging to lose weight than the 'average' woman, but it is possible. The only way you will lose weight and keep it off is by dealing with the underlying factors that cause you to hold onto fat.

Fat will not be burned when insulin levels are high, so you need to target insulin resistance by following a diet designed for PCOS, doing regular aerobic and resistance exercise every 2 days, maximizing your sleep, and taking nutritional supplements. Insulin resistant women need more than just a multivitamin.  Research indicates deficiencies in magnesium, chromium, and B vitamins as common. If you are taking metformin you should supplement with a multivitamin and separate vitamin B12 tablet. A naturopath can also prescribe you a personalized herbal formula to target insulin resistance.

MYTH 2: If you have PCOS you won't be able to fall pregnant without IVF.

INCORRECT! Although having PCOS can make it difficult to conceive, and IVF has helped many women it is not the only option available for you. There are also many women who have conceived with less invasive treatments such as dietary changes, herbs and nutritional support.

With PCOS, regular ovulation does not always occur , so the first step is to determine if you are ovulating.  There are a number of ways you can do this including blood tests, daily temperature testing, and/or ovulation detector kits.

If you are ovulating, fantastic! it's more of a matter of getting the timing right for conception. If you have established that you are not ovulating, then seek naturopathic help  with naturally stimulating ovulation.

Losing 5% of body fat can assist in restoration of regular ovulation, as can reducing stress and anxiety, dealing with nutritional deficiencies, losing weight and restoring hormonal balance with herbal medicine.

MYTH 3: I don’t need to worry about my PCOS until I am trying to fall pregnant.

INCORRECT! For many women, trying to conceive is the biggest concern they have with PCOS, but PCOS brings with it many other concerns that can be just as challenging. The effect that PCOS has on a woman's femininity and self esteem cannot be underestimated.

The physical issues that occur with PCOS such as excess hair and hair loss, weight gain, can be dismissed by health professionals as not being a problem, when in fact they are a consequence of more serious underlying imbalances that can lead to further reproductive conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, early menopause and cysts.

Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance is a major health concern underlying many PCOS symptoms and should be dealt with as early as possible, to prevent the risk of diabetes and other serious health conditions such as thyroid imbalance and hypertension.

MYTH 4: PCOS goes away after menopause.

INCORRECT! It's true, after menopause, many changes occur within a woman’s your body.   Some of your PCOS symptoms may go away such as painful , heavy periods,  but the underlying metabolic causes of PCOS will still be there.

Menopause does not cure your PCOS.  You may still experience excess hair and acne, weight gain, and sugar cravings.

A hysterectomy will stop period problems, but it won’t stop the other symptoms. After menopause or a hysterectomy, you can gain weight quickly and find it challenging to lose.

You are at a higher risk of osteoporosis, hot flushes, and cardiovascular disease.

MYTH 5: The oral contraceptive pill will 'regulate' my cycle.

INCORRECT! Taking the birth control pill provides your body with artificial hormones to simulate a normal cycle.  It gives you a period regularly which can prevent the lining of the uterus from building up which is beneficial.  It is also a good contraceptive, and can reduce symptoms such as acne and excess body hair. The problem is, most pills affect carbohydrate metabolism making  insulin resistance WORSE!  Something you don’t need when you have PCOS as it is stimulating one of the main factors contributing to your PCOS!

The pill is not really regulating your cycle ...  it’s not allowing your body to do the work, it is doing the work for your body. Remember, a regulated menstrual cycle is one that is occurring regularly and promotes regularity of ovulation ... on its own accord.
